Get Clear, Radiant Skin with this Homemade Face Toner

I’ve always had problematic skin… oily and prone to breakouts. It goes way back to high school. Breakouts and acne are one of the toughest things for me. When my face breaks out it affects my confidence level a lot. I just want to hide inside until it goes away!

When I was younger I tried everything to cure breakouts, from the lengthy chemical-filled Proactiv skin care line to doctor prescribed topical gels. None of it ever really worked.

What I have come to realize over the years is clear skin happens from the inside out.

Our skin is the largest organ in our body. It is responsible for eliminating many of the toxins we consume. It’s simple: what goes in, must come out. We either piss it out, shit it out, or sweat it out. Have you ever noticed different smells of your sweat? Pay attention. For example, after a night of wine drinking, my sweat has a very pungent odor (not as pleasant as that clean yummy sweat)! This is also true for eating certain foods. All you have to do is pay attention.

Nutrition

We’ve known for 14 years that a single meal of meat, dairy, and eggs triggers an inflammatory reaction inside the body within hours of consumption (NutritionFacts.org). Consuming animal products and dairy clogs up our intestines and is the hardest food for our bodies to digest and eliminate. If you want your skin to be full of life you need to reduce or eliminate lifeless foods (like dead animal products).

I am all for things in moderation, but if you have problem skin and consume dairy and meat frequently, this is the absolute first place to start. When I stopped eating dairy and meat a few years ago, replacing it with more fruits, veggies, and plant based protein sources (I still occasionally eat pizza and fish) my skin cleared up immediately. I noticed much less breakouts, especially during my cycle, and overall, a more radiant, clear complexion. I encourage you to experiment with eliminating dairy or meat products. It doesn’t have to be all at once, just try one thing at a time. Let it be a process and pay attention to how you feel.

Worried about getting enough protein? Here are 10 amazing plant based protein sources to add into your diet. Sorry people, but it’s a fact: a plant based diet contains much more water (since plants are mostly water) – and our skin needs water to be radiant and glowing! Clear skin is hydrated skin!

Lessening the Toxic Load

Start bringing more awareness to what you ingest and also use topically. This includes medications, supplements, beauty products, shampoo and other hair products. Most mainstream products are loaded with chemicals that actually dry out our skin in the long run (no wonder we keep going back for more). Educate yourself on all the ingredients in what you use and then decide if you want to continue use. For shampoo and conditioner, I switched to Shikai – super mild and very gentle! And here is the one and only delicious hair product I use (coconut and beach smelling, of course) by Herbivore Botanicals (amazing vegan and cruelty free products):

Simple Skin Care Routine

Do not pick! I know you’ve heard it a million times, but it really does make breakouts worse as it spreads bacteria around your face even more. Revamp your skin care regime with a simple routine. Stick to natural, organic and vegan products with the least amount of ingredients possible.

My current routine is this:

  1. Light rinse with Dr. Bronner’s soap (lavender and almond are my faves, but they are all divine)
  2. Homemade ACV face toner (recipe below) applied with cotton ball all over face
  3. Weleda Sensitive Skin Facial Lotion (incredible line of products, all vegan and cruelty free)

Clear Skin Routine for Sensitive Skin

Homemade ACV Face Toner for Clear Skin

Three Simple Ingredients

3 tablespoons Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar (a natural astringent that reduces appearance of pimples, age spots, acne scars)

10-12 drops Organic Lavender & Tea Tree Essential Oil (lavender and tea tree oil are known for their powerful disinfecting and anti-inflammatory properties)

3/4 cup WaterMix it all together. I keep mine in a glass on my bathroom counter. Swirl it around before dipping your cotton ball in.

Clear Skin Face Toner

I use the toner in the morning and sometimes in the evening when cleansing my skin.

I swear by this routine! I’ve been doing it for the past three months and my skin is healthier than ever.

All in all, this is really just a practice of awareness and trial and error. Start paying closer attention to your own habits, what you’re putting into your body and on your body. And start drinking more water!

Not only will having clear skin boost your confidence, but you’ll be feeling like a million bucks because you’re taking better care of your inner temple, and that is the most important thing of all.

Delicious Homemade Blender Hummus

I literally can’t believe I’ve been buying store bought hummus for so long.

I was under the impression that I needed either a food processor or a Vitamix blender in order to make this stuff and for some reason I thought it would be a pain in the ass to make, take forever and make a huge mess.

Turns out I was able to make a legit batch of this Mediterranean deliciousness with my $25 blender from Target in less than 15 minutes. Seriously?!

Needless to say, my addiction has now worsened. Are there 12 step programs for hummus addicts?
Not only is it delicious and nutritious, it’s gluten and dairy free, making it a huge staple of my diet! So…

Without further adieu, I present you with the simple-ass recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 (540 ml) can chickpeas, drained & rinsed
  • 2 tbsp good quality olive oil
  • 2 tbsp good quality tahini
  • 4 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 small garlic cloves, chopped (or use roasted garlic for a sweeter taste, this is my fave!)
  • 1/4 cup water as required to process (you may need a bit more, just keep an eye on the consistency as it blends)
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt or pink salt
  • Additional olive oil, paprika, & parsley for garnish

Steps:

  • PREP YOUR INGREDIENTS
    • Chop and squeeze fresh lemon juice into a bowl
    • If using fresh garlic, chop it
    • Chop a bit of parsley for garnish

Get your ish together…

THROW IT ALL IN THE BLENDER

  • Dry ingredients first!
  • Add water slowly, as needed
  • Blend it up – I take the lid off once it gets going and stick a spoon in there around the edges while its blending to make sure it gets as mixed up as possible
  • Transfer to a bowl, add a sprinkle of paprika and chopped parsley, and drizzle olive oil

Mix it up yo…

Have fun and experiment with different variations, like adding jalapeno for some spice or doing avocado or black bean versions. The possibilities are endless!

Serve with tortilla chips, or my favorite lately is just baby carrots and mini bell peppers!

Full disclosure: this does in no way mean I do not want a Vitamix blender!

Hummus lovers unite!

Enjoy! Feel free to share the love and make sure to subscribe to my blog to stay updated with more healthy and delicious recipes, yoga inspiration, and wellness tips.

Fresh Roasted Corn & Black Bean Summer Salad

Fresh Roasted Corn & Black Bean Summer Salad

It’s amazing how practicing yoga makes me so much more aware of what I put in my body. This is something I absolutely love about yoga. After I have a sweaty, challenging practice I don’t want to eat shit food. Healthy, mindful eating just seems to come so naturally.

Your body is your temple… Be mindful when you cook and when you eat. Put love into the food you cook. People can taste it. As you eat your food, think about and tell yourself how the food is nourishing your body. Energy and the power of our thoughts are incredible.

This delicious cold salad is vegan, high in protein & so easy to make! It’s great by itself or as a side. My favorite way to eat it lately is on top a bed of greens topped with sliced avocado and honey mustard dressing drizzle… YUM! Make a big bowl and keep it in the fridge…

Fresh Roasted Corn & Black Bean Summer Salad

INGREDIENTS //

three ears of corn

1 can organic black beans

1 cup cooked red quinoa (1/2 cup uncooked) – protein, baby!

1/2 small red onion, chopped

1 cup grape tomatoes, chopped

1/2 cup cilantro, chopped

juice of 1-2 limes

pink himalayan salt, to taste

PREPARATION //

1) Preheat oven to 425F.

2) Cook the quinoa: put 1/2 cup uncooked red quinoa in a pot with 1/2 cup water. Bring to a boil then simmer with lid on for 15 minutes. Cool in fridge.

3) Put whole ears of corn in oven with husk on. Keep an eye on them – rotate occasionally until they turn dark brown-blackish. Take them out, let them cool for a few minutes. Take off the husks and cut the corn off the cob. Chill corn in fridge for a bit.

4) Combine chilled quinoa & corn with all other ingredients, mix it up and enjoy!

5) Be grateful & always give thanks for the little things, which are huge things to some people… like a delicious meal.

6) Always EAT YOUR COLORS & drink lots of water to stay hydrated in the heat!

Lots of Love & Light!

Namaste.

Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Cleanse

MY FAVE. We all have parasites in our bodies – some are good, some are bad. This cleanse cleans out the bad ones and completely cleanses the liver & kidneys! Good to do it every six months or so…
EAT NORMALLY while doing this cleanse! It is not a starve-yourself-of-food cleanse! Just try to eat lots of fresh foods while cleansing (and always!) – fruits, veggies, whole grains, fish if you choose. You will notice that your appetite is naturally curbed by the amount of liquid you are drinking, anyways.

DIY Coconut Oil Toothpaste

Keep it Simple

The health of your mouth directly correlates with the health of the rest of your body, and it’s always best to know exactly what you are putting into your body. These days, many products have an overwhelming number of ingredients, most of them virtually unpronounceable — a good rule of thumb is that if you don’t know what it is, stay away from it. Aside from eliminating a major amount of fluoride from your body, this all natural toothpaste is super easy to make… it only takes three ingredients. THREE! The taste is an adjustment, but I quickly grew to love it, and my teeth actually feel cleaner and fresher than ever with this easy recipe!

Ingredients

Toothpaste Ingredients

Organic, raw coconut oil

Baking soda

Essential oil of your choice (peppermint, spearmint, or cinnamon, for example)

A small glass jar for storage

Raw Organic Coconut - Live Superfoods

Directions

You can make as much as you want, but I like to make small amounts at a time so it’s always fresh. Here’s how:

Spoon a couple scoops of coconut oil into the glass jar – melt it down by setting it on a warm stove. Add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda and 12-15 drops essential oil. Mix it all up. Taste it. The baking soda should not be too overpowering, but there should be enough to clean your teeth, so add more if you think it’s not strong enough.

Voila! Simple as that.

Oil Pulling

If you’re worried about plaque (the major reason why fluoride is present in most toothpaste), add oil pulling to your routine – a thousand-year-old practice of oral health in India & Asia. Simply swish two tablespoons of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes, once or twice per week. Add a few drops of clove essential oil for added benefits. Research shows that oil pulling helps heal and cure tooth decay, heal bleeding gums, naturally whiten your teeth, strengthen jaw muscles, and overall, deeply cleanse your mouth & freshen breath.

These simple habits will make a world of difference for your health.
